- Not all, but most of the connection info is displayed in those 2-3 chars.
- The OH, SD, RD, and TR lights are separate. (offhook, send, receive, and
- DTR) When connected, the 2 char display alternates between all the things
- it needs to show, showing each one for a second or two in a loop, i.e.
- "CD" "LP" "DC" "R34" "28" "T34" "26", each for a second for a v.34
- connection receiving at 28.8, sending at 26.4, with v.42 (LP for LAP-M)
- and v.42 data compression (DC). The "34" in "R34" and "T34" is crammed
- into the space of one character (one of the 3-char symbols). If there is
- an error or retrain, the normal sequence on that display is interupted for
- a second to display RE or TE for receive or transmit errors, and either RT
- for retrains, or an R or L followed by an arrow, depending on your
- settings.
-
- Personally, there are some things I liked better about the older-style
- display on the 2400 FaxModem plus. The speed on the two digit display is
- cool, but things like "CD" should have their own light instead of making
- the cycle time longer. On the 2400 it had separate lights for LAP-M
- (v.42) and MNP, and a DC light for data compression, so you could tell
- that info at a glance without having to wait for it to cycle around.
- Errors and retrains being displayed in the big 2 digit part is good
- though. MNP sort of makes sense to be displayed on the 2-digits instead
- because you can tell if its MNP 2,3,4,5, or 10
-
- Other things displayed there include "OK" or "AA" depending on auto-answer
- mode, and "DI" for dialing or "RI" for ring. These make sense to be on
- the 2-digit display because theres obviously no connection info to report
- at those times.
